How to Upscale an Image

1

Upload Image

Drag and drop your image (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, or TIFF) into the tool above, or click to browse. Up to 20 MB.

2

Choose Settings

Select the upscaling factor (2x or 4x) and the AI model (Fast for speed, Quality for best detail). Then click Upscale.

3

Download Result

Compare original and upscaled side-by-side, then click Download to save your enhanced image at the new resolution.

How AI Image Upscaling Works

This tool uses Real-ESRGAN (Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network), a state-of-the-art deep learning model designed to upscale images while adding realistic detail. Unlike simple interpolation methods like bilinear or bicubic resizing, which only blur pixels to fill gaps, Real-ESRGAN generates new detail that looks natural.

The model was trained on millions of image pairs — low-resolution inputs and their high-resolution originals — learning to predict what fine details should exist at higher resolutions. When you upload an image, the neural network analyzes textures, edges, and patterns, then synthesizes sharp, detailed pixels where the original had none.

Key advantages of AI upscaling over traditional methods:

  • Sharper edges — text, boundaries, and fine lines remain crisp instead of becoming blurry.
  • Recovered textures — skin, fabric, grass, and other textures look natural at higher resolution.
  • Reduced artifacts — JPEG compression noise and blocky artifacts are cleaned up during upscaling.
  • No halos or ringing — unlike sharpening filters, AI upscaling doesn't create bright outlines around edges.

When to Use AI Upscaling

Old & Low-Resolution Photos

Restore family photos, scanned prints, or images from old phones and cameras. AI upscaling adds detail that was never captured, making them suitable for printing or sharing at modern resolutions.

Screenshots & UI Mockups

Upscale small screenshots, app previews, or wireframes for presentations and documentation. Text and UI elements stay sharp when enhanced with the Fast model.

Social Media & Marketing

Turn small product images, thumbnails, or social media downloads into high-resolution versions suitable for print, banners, or larger displays without visible pixelation.

Digital Art & Illustrations

Scale up pixel art, illustrations, icons, or game assets. The Fast model preserves clean lines and flat colors, while the Quality model adds fine detail to painterly artwork.

Upscaling Options

Scale: 2x vs 4x

2x upscaling doubles your image dimensions. A 500×500 image becomes 1000×1000. This is the safest choice — results are consistently sharp and natural-looking because the AI has to "invent" fewer pixels.

4x upscaling quadruples dimensions. A 500×500 image becomes 2000×2000. This produces dramatically larger images but requires the AI to generate more detail. Best used when you need a significant size increase, like preparing a small web image for print.

Model: Fast vs Quality

The Fast model uses a lightweight neural network optimized for speed. It processes most images in 3–10 seconds and works well for screenshots, illustrations, graphics with clean lines, and images where speed matters more than maximum detail.

The Quality model uses the full Real-ESRGAN architecture with more processing layers. It takes 20–60 seconds but produces noticeably better results on photographs with fine textures like hair, fabric, fur, foliage, and skin. Choose Quality when the image has natural, complex detail and you want the best possible output.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, completely free with no hidden costs. There is no signup required, no watermark added, and no limit on the number of images you can upscale. All uploads are encrypted via 256-bit SSL, and files are automatically deleted from our servers within 2 hours.
You can upload JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and TIFF images up to 20 MB. The output is saved in the same format as the input — JPG stays JPG, PNG stays PNG. For best results, upload PNG for lossless quality or JPG for photographs.
The maximum upload size is 20 MB. For 4x upscaling, we recommend images under 2000×2000 pixels to keep processing times reasonable and output files manageable (the result would be 8000×8000 pixels). Larger images work better with 2x upscaling.
The Fast model processes most images in 3–10 seconds. The Quality model takes longer — typically 20–60 seconds — because it uses a more detailed neural network with additional processing layers. Processing time also depends on the input image size: smaller images are faster.
Your uploaded image and the upscaled result are stored temporarily for you to download. Both files are automatically deleted from our servers within 2 hours. We do not keep, share, analyze, or use your images for any purpose beyond providing the upscaling service.
The Fast model uses a lightweight neural network that processes images quickly (3–10 seconds). It works well for screenshots, illustrations, icons, and graphics with clean edges. The Quality model uses the full Real-ESRGAN architecture, taking 20–60 seconds but producing significantly sharper results on photographs with complex textures like hair, fur, fabric, foliage, and skin detail.
