How to Post a GIF on Instagram in 4 Steps
- Convert the GIF to MP4 in the converter above. Every frame is kept.
- Save the MP4 to your phone. On iPhone, open the download, tap Share and choose Save Video so it appears in Photos. On Android it lands in Downloads or your gallery.
- Open Instagram, tap +, choose Post or Reel and pick the video.
- Post it. Short videos loop as they play in the feed, just like the GIF did.
Very short GIFs (one or two seconds) may be rejected or look abrupt. Repeat the loop in a GIF editor before converting so the video runs a few seconds.
Why Social Media Prefers MP4 Over GIF
Every major social platform converts uploaded video to its own internal format (typically H.264 or H.265 in MP4). When you upload a GIF, the platform must first decode the 256-color, frame-by-frame GIF, then re-encode it as video. This double conversion creates quality loss.
By converting GIF to MP4 before uploading, you give the platform a higher-quality source with 16.7 million colors and temporal compression already applied. The result: sharper output, smoother playback, and files that are much smaller to upload.
Platform-by-Platform Specs
Upload limits change often, so check each platform’s help page before a large upload. A GIF converted to MP4 is usually a few megabytes, far below most limits.

Instagram: GIF to MP4
Instagram does not accept GIF uploads. You must convert to MP4 first. Here is what you need to know:
- Very short clips: a one- or two-second loop may be rejected or look abrupt. Our converter keeps the GIF’s original length, so lengthen the loop before converting if needed.
- Feed posts: 1080×1080 (square) or 1080×1350 (portrait 4:5) work best. Instagram crops videos to fit these ratios.
- Stories & Reels: 1080×1920 (9:16 vertical). Full-screen vertical content gets significantly more engagement than square or landscape.
- Frame rate: the MP4 keeps the GIF’s own timing. Instagram re-encodes uploads, so there is no need to change it.
- No audio: the converted MP4 has no sound track, because GIFs have none. Add music in Instagram’s editor if you want sound.
TikTok: GIF to MP4
TikTok is built for short video and handles MP4 well:
- Resolution: 1080×1920 is the standard full-screen vertical size. Most GIFs are much smaller, so expect some softness when TikTok scales them up.
- File size: a converted GIF is usually a few megabytes, far below TikTok’s upload limit.
- Frame rate: GIFs usually run at 10–25 fps, and the MP4 keeps that timing.
- Looping: TikTok auto-loops all videos. Your converted GIF will loop seamlessly, same as the original.
- GIF stickers: TikTok's built-in GIF feature uses GIPHY. For custom animation, upload your converted MP4 as a regular video.
X / Twitter: GIF to MP4
X (formerly Twitter) has a native "GIF" upload button, but it actually converts GIFs to MP4 internally. You can skip the middleman:
- Direct GIF upload: X accepts GIF files and turns them into looping video. If a GIF is over X’s GIF size limit (check the current limit), convert it to MP4 and upload it as a video.
- Video upload: MP4 up to 512 MB, max 2 minutes 20 seconds. H.264 with AAC audio.
- Resolution: 1280×720 or 1920×1080. X re-encodes at lower bitrate, so higher source quality helps.
- Loop behavior: GIF uploads always loop on X. How regular videos loop depends on their length and the app.
- Quality tip: converting GIF to MP4 yourself (instead of letting X do it) gives you control over quality settings. X's built-in conversion is aggressive.
Facebook: GIF to MP4
Facebook has built-in GIF support via GIPHY, but for custom animations:
- Feed posts: upload the MP4 directly. Square (1080×1080) and vertical 4:5 videos fill more of the mobile feed.
- Facebook Reels: 1080×1920 vertical, the same format as Instagram Reels.
- GIF sharing: comments and Messenger have a built-in GIF search. For your own animation in a post, upload it as an MP4.
- Quality: Facebook compresses video aggressively. Starting with a high-quality MP4 (instead of a 256-color GIF) produces noticeably better results after Facebook's re-encoding.
Discord: GIF to MP4
Discord has strict file size limits that make GIF problematic:
- Free tier: 10 MB per file (2025 limit; check Discord’s help for changes). Large GIFs often exceed it, and the MP4 version is usually much smaller.
- Nitro: 500 MB limit. Less of a concern, but MP4 still uploads faster and plays more smoothly.
- Inline playback: Discord shows MP4 files with an inline player. Unlike a GIF, the viewer usually has to press play.
- Emoji: custom animated emoji must be GIF files under 256 KB. This is the one case where GIF is required — MP4 cannot be used for emoji or stickers.
Optimal Conversion Settings
For the best results across all social platforms, use these settings:
| Setting | Recommended Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Codec | H.264 (AVC) | Universal support on all platforms |
| Container | MP4 | Required by Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook |
| Frame rate | Keep the GIF’s timing | Platforms re-encode uploads anyway |
| Audio | None needed | GIFs have no sound; add music in the app |
| Quality (CRF) | 18–23 | High source quality survives platform re-encoding better |
| Pixel format | yuv420p | Required for compatibility; yuv444p causes playback issues |
Our converter uses H.264 in MP4, yuv420p and CRF 23 with -tune animation. It keeps the GIF’s timing and does not add an audio track.
Common Issues and Fixes
GIF too short for Instagram
A one-second loop can be rejected or look abrupt as a video. Our converter keeps the GIF’s length, so repeat the loop in a GIF editor before converting. If a platform rejects the file, check its minimum video length.
Blurry or pixelated output
This happens when the source GIF has a very small resolution (e.g., 240×240) and is uploaded to a platform that displays at 1080p. The platform upscales the low-res video, creating blur. For best results, start with the highest resolution GIF available.
Colors look washed out
GIFs are limited to 256 colors, which can include colors outside the standard video color space. During conversion, these are mapped to the BT.709 color space used by H.264. In rare cases, this causes slight color shifts. The MP4 will still have better overall color fidelity than the GIF displayed on screen.
No sound on the video
GIFs do not have audio, so the converted MP4 is silent. Some platforms may not auto-play silent videos or may show a "muted" indicator. This is expected behavior and matches how GIFs work natively.
Adding GIFs to Instagram Stories, Comments and DMs
Instagram has a built-in GIF search powered by GIPHY. In a Story, tap the sticker icon and choose GIF. In comments and direct messages, tap the GIF button next to the text field.
These searches only show GIFs from GIPHY’s library. To use your own animation there, it has to be uploaded to GIPHY first, and stickers need a transparent background. For a normal post, convert your GIF to MP4 instead.
